If too many toxins and waste products come from the intestines, it disrupts the liver, which is reflected in the work of other organs. The mechanisms of cell damage are different, but the formation of oxygen free radicals-oxidants plays a central role in this formation. Excessive formation of reactive oxygen species oxidants causes oxidative stress, which is important in the development of toxic liver damage, cardiovascular disease, neurodegenerative disease and cancer. The human body is protected with a strong defense against reactive compounds with antioxidant-antioxidant substances, which are in cells and intercellular fluids. In a healthy body, there is a balance between oxidants and antioxidants. When a person is constantly affected by toxic substances, too much reactive substance is produced, the defense is exhausted, resulting in damage to cells and tissues. Antioxidants act as scavengers and suppressors of free radicals but some people can stop the chain reaction of lipid oxidation in cell membranes (lipid peroxidation) and thus prevent cell damage. To protect against lipid peroxidation, it includes numerous enzymes and non-enzymatic antioxidants. These include glutamine, peroxidase, reductase, transferase, superoxide dismutase, vitamin C and E among them are those that promote the regeneration of damaged cell particles.
The most important antioxidant of the liver is glutathione. It is an intracellular antioxidant that is not only capable of removing toxic substances from the body, but also restores (recycles) other antioxidants, such as vitamin C, E, CoQ10, and others. Glutathione is the last link in the chain of recycling antioxidants, which are then excreted by the liver from the body.
Glutathione is produced in the liver from three amino acids, cysteine, glutamic acid and glycine. Over the years, unfortunately, the ability of the liver to form glutathione decreases. In its antioxidant action, it is inactivated, becomes an oxidant (in the form of oxidized GSSG), but also regenerates itself. The optimal steady state is the ratio between actively reduced glutathione GSH and inactivated GSSR 90/10%. Problems arise when this ratio falls below 70/30%. Many diseases of modern times and accelerated aging are causally related to the deterioration of this scale for example. Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, cardiovascular disease, asthma and COPD, rheumatoid arthritis and other autoimmune diseases. To prevent these diseases, it is important to maintain an optimal ratio of reduced and oxidized glutathione. To achieve this, the introduction of glutathione with food is inadequate, as it is absorbed very little from the intestine, but can promote the formation of glutathione in the liver with the intake of certain nutrients with diet or as dietary supplements.
Glutathione has several beneficial functions in the body:
• is a major intracellular antioxidant and restorer of the active form of many other antioxidants.
• stimulates the work of nitric oxide in the inner wall of the vein (endothelium) which regulates the work of most organs of the human body.
• Assists metabolism and biochemical activities such as synthesis and regeneration of damaged DNA, synthesis of proteins, prostaglandins and activation of enzymes. All body systems, especially the immune, nervous, digestive, and respiratory systems, are dependent on the functioning of the glutathione system.
What can increase glutathione production in the liver?
The amino acid cysteine, which is an integral part of glutathione. It is found in organic meat (hormones and various toxins neutralize glutathione, oxidize it), it is also contained in watermelon, walnuts and hazelnuts, avocado, cheese, dark green vegetable leaves, asparagus, broccoli, tomatoes, wheat germ and oatmeal.
What the liver does important:
They help cleanse the body of toxic and harmful waste products, including drugs and alcohol. One of the most important activities of liver enzymes, is the conversion of lipophilic (fat-soluble) metabolites of these harmful substances into more hydrophilic (water-soluble) which is easily removed from the body via the kidneys.
It regulates blood sugar metabolism so that it is stored in the form of glycogen if it is too much and restores it from glycogen or shapes it from protein and fat if it is too little.
It forms bile, which is needed to digest fat in the small intestine.
It stores fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K and vitamin B12 in the long run.
The liver is a real chemical factory that produces vital proteins such as albumin and globulin. Albumin helps maintain calcium and other important substances in the blood and regulates the amount of fluid in the bloodstream. Some globulins are antibodies and are an integral part of the immune system as well as the pigment components in the blood hemoglobin. They produce chemicals needed to clot the blood, form cholesterol, and metabolize certain hormones, such as aldosterone, testosterone, and estrogen. Too much aldosterone retains sodium and lowers potassium, which can raise blood pressure and have a negative effect on the cardiovascular system.
Prolonged exposure to low levels of harmful substances can lead to fatty liver. Exposure to large amounts of harmful substances most often causes varying degrees of liver tissue deterioration.
